Power Level: Meme
Decks listed in this section are all doing something that is incredibly sweet when it works, but either lack consistency or are weak to disruption. They are a blast to play though.
A combo deck that looks to cast Stonecoil Serpent for Zero Mana and then counter it with a copy of Tibalt’s Trickery – turning it into a giant spell at random for fun and profit.
This is a combo deck that looks to mulligan to a copy of Treasure Hunt in its opening hand. You then play Treasure Hunts drawing through your deck and discarding a slew of lands with cycling to eventually cast a giant lethal Zenith Flare.
This is a midrange value deck that seeks to generate card advantage through value creatures like Coiling Oracle, Eternal Witness, and Militia Bugler. The meme factor comes in from our combo finish which looks to leverage the card Biovisionary alongside cheap clone effects like Phantasmal Image and Mirror Image. In a pinch these clones can also be used to make more value creatures allowing us to flood the board with two power creatures.
You know what they say – you can’t make an omelet, or in this case an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn – without cracking a few eggs. This deck is looking to tuck a scary creature under Modern staple Summoner’s Egg and then crack it via Phyrexia’s Core or Greater Gargadon. Should we be unable to find our deck’s namesake we also have a backup plan of cheating our large creatures into play via Through the Breach.
This is a combo deck that puts some combination of Puresteel Paladin and Sram, Senior Edificer into play and then plays out a variety of zero mana equipment to draw through its deck while generating storm count. Mox Opal along with Retract lets us pick all of our gear back up and keep drawing cards while we combo. Eventually we play two pieces of fast mana and cast a lethal Grapeshot to win the game.
This deck might be the biggest Meme Modern contains. We choose to be on the draw, discard Shadowborn Apostle to hand size, and then Surgical Extraction all the other copies out of our deck. Now that our deck is small we play Shelldock Isle to find Emrakul, the Aeons Torn which we can then cast since our deck is now as small as it is.
Please note the video below is from one of my older streams so there are a few moments of the kids being loud in the background.
This mostly creatureless deck is looking to generate creature tokens and then convert them into a scary monster via Polymorph or Proteus Staff. We have a back up plan of being a value midrange on the back of planeswalkers and creature lands.
This is probably the deck I am most Internet famous for. I was paid a large sum of money to play this deck at an SCG open in an Owl Costume. It is a total hoot and if you enjoy sending your opponent’s cards back to their hand I would highly recommend this one.
